About us

The main research of the work group "Pediatric-Oncology Research" at the University Children's Hospital III at the University Hospital Essen is focussed on the analysis of the molecular pathogenesis of embryonic tumors (neuroblastoma, medulloblastoma, retinoblastoma) as the basic principle of a rational, individual therapy to improve the long term survival of children suffering from malignant embryonic tumors. A special focus is the analysis of relapse tumors, as there is a most urgent demand for novel therapies.

To analyse the genome, the transcriptome and the proteome we employ different high-throughput analyses combined with a bioinformatic analysis to identify central factors of tumorpathogenesis and −progression. A special focus is put on epigenetics and microRNAs as important aspects in the regulation of gene expression in the context of tumorpathogenesis. We here aim to identify target structures of clinical and therapeutic relevance. The concepts that we generate in the frame of high-throughput analyses will be validated in vitro and in vivo. Therefore we use cell culture model systems, but also human tumor xenografts in immunodeficient mice and genetically engineered mouse models. As an important step in order to develop new therapeutic concepts our hypotheses are validated in mouse models to finally simulate therapeutic intervention.
